As researchers, our roots are in the lab. However, we always want to bridge the gap between scientific data and real-world efficacy. That's why we conduct clinical studies – to move beyond lab-based results and dive into the tangible impact our topical supplements can have on your skin’s appearance and overall health. In our most recent 12-week clinical study, we tested the efficacy of OS-01 BODY, OneSkin’s daily moisturizer specifically designed for the skin below the neck and powered by the OS-01 peptide. During the study, we looked at a variety of factors including hydration, texture, systemic inflammation levels, and barrier function. Curious about what we found? As you’ll see here in a minute, the results were impressive.

Why our R&D process is different

One of our key differentiators is our cutting-edge research and development platform. Every product (including OS-01 BODY) starts in the lab. Each ingredient is tested individually on human skin samples, models, and cells, then tested again as a whole to ensure our products improve skin health and longevity at the cellular and molecular levels. Once we understand how they impact skin cells in a controlled setting, we move on to beta testing which allows us to see how our products work in everyday scenarios. Finally, we conduct clinical studies to validate our lab and real-world findings.

Putting OS-01 BODY to the (clinical) test

Our 12-week double-blind clinical study included 52 participants, ages 60 to 90 years old. Half the group (Group A, n=27) used OS-01 BODY twice a day, while the other half (Group B, n=25) used a control moisturizer twice a day. Through specialized instruments, we measured hydration and barrier function – essentially how well the participants’ skin retained moisture and stayed protected against environmental stressors. But we didn’t just rely on quantitative data. We asked participants how they felt about their skin after using OS-01 BODY using a self-perception questionnaire. After all, it’s one thing to have data that proves a product works, it’s another for people using it to know it works. The study also monitored the biological age of participants using GlycanAge, a test that analyzes glycans (complex sugar molecules in the blood that change as you age) to tell us how old their bodies behaved before and after using OS-01 BODY. Additionally, we measured cytokine levels in their blood – critical biomarkers of systemic inflammation – to understand the surface-level effects of OS-01 BODY as well as deeper, whole-body impacts of our topical supplement.

The results: more hydration, less systemic inflammation

After 12 weeks of using OS-01 BODY, participants had significant improvements in hydration, skin barrier function, and inflammation levels as validated through our clinical instruments. Participants also reported enhancements in their skin’s general appearance and texture after 12 weeks. Some even noticed that their skin looked and felt better within 4 weeks. Here’s a breakdown of the data:
  • Hydration: Up 38.34% on forearm skin and 38.38% on the upper arm*
  • Skin barrier: Up 41.49% on forearm skin and 34.73% on the upper arm**
  • Skin texture: 68% of participants noticed an improvement after four weeks and 70% of participants noticed an improvement after 12 weeks ***
  • General appearance: 57% of participants noticed an improvement after 4 weeks and 70% of participants noticed an improvement after 12 weeks***
*Measured by corneometer at 12 weeks vs baseline **Measured by tewameter at 12 weeks vs. baseline ***Self-perceptionBut here’s the really exciting part. The group that used OS-01 BODY had a significant reduction in IL-8 circulating cytokines compared to the baseline. Cytokines are indicators of inflammation in the body, and when those levels go down, so does systemic inflammation. While the changes weren’t significant compared to the control group, it’s a promising trend that confirms what we’ve suspected for some time – that stronger and healthier skin better protects your body from external factors, which may contribute to lower levels of inflammation throughout the body. And because this type of inflammation is a leading cause of age-related diseases (1), such as cardiovascular disease and dementia, using OS-01 BODY could be the first step to extending your health span. As for biological age, participants in the OS-01 BODY group didn’t show a change during the study, meaning their bodies didn't behave older or younger. However, researchers observed that the biological age of the group using the control moisturizer actually increased, which confirms that using OS-01 BODY can put the brakes on systemic aging.

Conclusion

We already understood the benefits of OS-01 BODY in the lab, but this study proves it can make substantial changes in real-life scenarios. From improved hydration for dry skin to a stronger skin barrier and lower inflammation biomarkers, OS-01 BODY does more than make your skin below the neck look better; it makes it healthier and more resilient against aging.
